Mark Percival to retire: St Helens centre calls time on 14-year, five-title career
St Helens centre Mark Percival will retire from professional rugby league at the end of the 2026 Betfred Super League season, bringing to a close a 14-year career spent entirely at one club.
The 32-year-old, who has been capped by England at international level, made 273 appearances for Saints since debuting in 2013. During that time he won five Super League titles, four League Leaders' Shields (awarded to the team finishing top of the regular-season table), the Challenge Cup and the World Club Challenge — the annual meeting of the champions of the English and Australian games (BBC Sport).
Percival told the St Helens club website that the decision was an emotional one. His mind wanted to carry on playing, but his body was telling him to stop. He plans to have his shoulder replaced at the end of the year — surgery that will, in the long term, let him pick up his children and avoid the symptoms he struggled with through the current season (St Helens RLFC).
"I love the club and I want to play," Percival said, describing the call to retire as difficult. Injuries have limited his involvement in 2026, with the centre missing a large chunk of the campaign (BBC Sport). He was nonetheless named in Saints' matchday squad for this weekend's fixture against Leigh Leopards, giving him a chance to pull on the red V one more time before the season ends.
For a player to spend an entire career at a single club is increasingly rare in the professional era. Percival arrived at St Helens as a teenager and departs with a trophy haul that places him among the most decorated players of his generation at the club.
What stands out is the honesty of his reasoning. A shoulder replacement at 32 is a stark reminder of the physical cost of professional rugby, in either code. Percival framed it not as sacrifice but as practicality — a body that has given everything needs repairing so that life after rugby can be lived fully.
St Helens announced the retirement on 3 September 2026, with Percival's remaining appearances in the current season now counting down toward a farewell.
