Violet Grohl Strips Down The Cure's 'High' for Triple J Like a Version Debut
Violet Grohl has delivered a stripped-down acoustic cover of The Cure's 'High' for Triple J's Like a Version series, trading the original's layered guitar work for a barebones arrangement built around her vocal.
The performance, filmed for the Australian youth broadcaster's long-running cover segment, marked Grohl's first appearance on Like a Version. The format invites a musician into Triple J's studios to perform one of their own songs plus a cover of someone else's — a combination that has made the Friday-morning slot a fixture of Australian radio since the segment began airing at 7am each week. Grohl told Triple J hosts Abby and Tyrone that 'High' has been a personal favourite for years. She traced her Cure fandom back to age 12 or 13, when hearing 'Friday I'm in Love' sent her deep into the band's catalogue. A separate ABC feature described 'High' — the 1992 single and lead track from The Cure's album Wish — as a sweet, childlike love song (Billboard; ABC / Triple J).
In the same session, Grohl performed an acoustic interpretation of '595', the third single from her debut album Be Sweet to Me. The record was released May 29 via Auroura and Republic Records and recorded across 2024 and 2025 (Billboard; ABC / Triple J).
Triple J published the cover, the '595' performance and a behind-the-scenes interview on its official YouTube channel on September 4, alongside short-form clips on YouTube Shorts. The broadcaster's Instagram account also posted a reel of the 'High' cover the same day (YouTube; Instagram).
Grohl is the eldest daughter of Foo Fighters frontman and former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, and her career has been building across several high-profile appearances. She contributed backing vocals to Foo Fighters' 'Show Me How', which reached No. 21 on Billboard's Hot Hard Rock Songs chart in 2023. She performed at the band's 2022 tribute concerts for late drummer Taylor Hawkins. In 2021, she and her father recorded a cover of X's 'Nausea', later performing it on Jimmy Kimmel Live! alongside Krist Novoselic, Dave Lombardo and Greg Kurstin (Billboard).
As a billed solo artist, though, the milestones are more recent. Grohl made her television debut with a full band on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in June, performing 'Bug in the Cake'. Earlier this year, her track 'THUM' entered Billboard's Adult Alternative Airplay chart at No. 38 — her first Billboard chart appearance as a solo artist (Billboard).
