Double Fine has revealed its first game since leaving Xbox: a comedy simulation called Thank You Bus Driver, now listed on Steam and GOG as "coming soon" and available to pre-order on both storefronts (Eurogamer, 6 September 2026).

The studio announced the project on 4 September 2026 via an official post on its website and a trailer on its DFTV video channel (Double Fine). The trailer credits the game to Double Fine Action Labs, a new publishing label under which Thank You Bus Driver is the first title (Double Fine game page, 6 September 2026).

The premise is straightforward and deliberately unhinged. Players take on the role of a town's bus driver — a reckless one, encouraged to drive fast, slap faster, and toss rulebreakers out of the bus (Eurogamer, 6 September 2026). Double Fine's own game page calls it a "chaotic bus driving game," which lines up with the studio's long-standing reputation for oddball comedy titles like Psychonauts and Brütal Legend.

The announcement carries weight beyond a single game reveal. Double Fine regained its independence from Xbox Game Studios in July 2026, part of a broader restructuring of Xbox announced by CEO Asha Sharma that affected roughly 3,200 roles across the division (Polygon, 5 September 2026; Eurogamer, 6 September 2026). As part of that restructuring, Double Fine was spun back out into independence while keeping hold of its intellectual property and back catalogue. Compulsion Games, another Xbox-owned studio, was cut loose in the same wave and likewise retained its IP.

The transition was not painless. Double Fine laid off roughly a quarter of its approximately 90-person team as part of the move out of Xbox (Eurogamer, 6 September 2026).

What makes Thank You Bus Driver stand out is the speed of the turnaround. Less than two months after formally separating from Xbox, Double Fine has a new game on storefronts, a new label to publish it under, and a trailer showing actual gameplay. For a studio that spent years inside a major publisher's structure, that is a quick signal of intent — the team is shipping again, on its own terms.

No release date has been given beyond the "coming soon" listing on Steam (Eurogamer, 6 September 2026). The game is also available to pre-order on GOG. No console versions have been announced.

For players, the takeaway is simple: one of the industry's most distinctive comedy studios is back on its own, already announcing games, and this time the joke involves throwing passengers off a moving bus.
