Sony Pictures Classics is launching an Oscar campaign for John Turturro in The Only Living Pickpocket in New York, following the film's fall-festival premiere at Telluride on 5 September 2026. The move carries a particular weight: Turturro, now 69, has never received an Academy Award nomination (Variety).

That gap is one of the more startling footnotes in American acting. Turturro won the best actor prize at Cannes in 1991 for the Coen brothers' Barton Fink. His turn as Herbie Stempel in Robert Redford's Quiz Show earned Golden Globe and SAG Award nominations but no Oscar call. More recently, his role as a defence attorney in HBO's 2016 series The Night Of brought Emmy, Golden Globe and SAG nominations. He has collected two Emmy nominations for playing Irving Bailiff on Apple TV+'s Severance, losing his most recent bid in 2025 to castmate Tramell Tillman (Variety).

The Only Living Pickpocket in New York was written and directed by Noah Segan and acquired by Sony Pictures Classics for a fall release. Turturro plays Harry Lehman, an aging pickpocket working a drastically changed New York while caring for his ailing wife, Rosie (Sony Pictures Classics). Reuters, reporting from the film's Sundance premiere in February 2026, described Harry as a seasoned thief who shows no sign of slowing down when he targets an ostentatiously wealthy Gen Z mark (Reuters).

The film first screened at Sundance in January and was named by Variety as one of seven films defining the early 2027 Oscars race in late August (Variety). It has also been selected for the New York Film Festival's Spotlight slate, where Turturro appears in a second film, A Statement (Variety). At Telluride, Sony Pictures Classics hosted a Saturday-night dinner with Turturro attending audience Q&As, the kind of intimate festival ritual that awards strategists use to build word of mouth among Academy voters (Variety).

Sony Pictures Classics lists the film as opening in New York and Los Angeles on 23 October, going nationwide on 30 October (Sony Pictures Classics). That corridor — a limited start followed by a wider break a week later — is a standard awards-season release pattern, designed to build critical momentum in top markets before expanding.

Variety's Telluride preview described the film as a Sundance hit featuring a performer "still awaiting his first Oscar nomination" (Variety). For a character actor whose career spans four decades and some of the most celebrated American films of their era, that campaign now has a clear film, a clear distributor and a clear corridor to the nominations.
