Swans Captain Mills' ACL Tear Rules Him Out of Finals, Threatens 2027 Season
Scans have confirmed the worst for Sydney Swans captain Callum Mills: a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, an injury that ends his finals campaign and could cost him the entire 2027 season (ABC News).
The 29-year-old sustained the injury during Sydney's 53-point upset win over the Brisbane Lions in their qualifying final. Mills's knee gave way late in the first quarter as he tried to corral Brisbane's Will Ashcroft near the boundary line. The Swans led 40-8 at the time. He was seen on crutches as teammates celebrated the win.
Sydney coach Dean Cox said he was already bracing for the diagnosis. "We were expecting the worst," Cox told reporters in the aftermath of the match, with AFL.com.au reporting he admitted the initial outlook was grim when asked specifically about a torn ACL (AFL.com.au). Fox Sports commentator Jason Dunstall was blunter during the broadcast, saying the injury had "ACL written all over it" (Fox Sports).
The scans confirming the ACL tear were completed on Monday. Mills will now meet with a specialist to schedule surgery — a reconstruction that, depending on recovery and rehabilitation, puts his 2027 season in genuine jeopardy.
For Mills, it is another cruel chapter in a career repeatedly interrupted by bad luck and bad timing. He played just seven games in 2024 after tearing the rotator cuff in his left shoulder during a Mad Monday end-of-season celebration — a wrestling contest with a teammate — and then missed Sydney's grand final loss that year with a hamstring strain picked up before the preliminary final (ABC News). He also broke his foot in 2018 while walking from a cafe, ending that season (AFL.com.au).
The 2026 season had been Mills's first since Sydney's 2022 grand final run in which he played more than 20 games. He had finally strung a full year together. Now the captain who led the Swans into September faces another long rehabilitation, and the question of whether he lines up at all in 2027.
For the Swans, the win over Brisbane was emphatic. For their captain, the cost was enormous.
