Miramax Adapts BookTok Bestseller 'Everything We Never Said' for the Big Screen
Miramax is developing a feature film adaptation of Sloan Harlow's YA romantic thriller Everything We Never Said, with the team behind Netflix's Emmy-winning series Trinkets set to write the screenplay. Amy Andelson and Emily Meyer will adapt the novel, which was published by G.P. Putnam's Sons in 2024 and built a large following on BookTok — the book-focused corner of TikTok — on its way to the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists. Deadline
The story follows Ella Graham, who falls for her best friend Hayley's boyfriend Sawyer after Hayley's death, then uncovers dark secrets hidden in Hayley's diary. Penguin Random House's own description calls it "a dark, romantic thriller" that "explores the secrets in even the best of friendships," aimed at readers who devour Colleen Hoover and Laura Nowlin. The novel was also named a Barnes & Noble Young Adult Book of the Month.
Alloy Entertainment president Leslie Morgenstein and EVP of theatrical film production Elysa Koplovitz Dutton will produce. Arianna D'Andrea is overseeing the project for Miramax. Alloy developed the book in its New York book division, licensed it to G.P. Putnam's Sons for publishing, and retained the film and television rights — a licensing model the company has used before, on properties including The Vampire Diaries, Gossip Girl, Pretty Little Liars, Netflix's You, and the film You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
Andelson and Meyer bring a deep résumé in YA adaptation. They created and wrote the Netflix series Trinkets, which won three Emmy Awards. They previously adapted The Great Gatsby for 20th Century Studios and director Jon M. Chu, and wrote the screenplays for Chu's Step Up 3D and the romantic dramedy Naomi and Ely's No Kiss List. Their own YA novel Layover was sold to Random House in a bidding war and published in 2018.
Harlow is also the author of All We Lost Was Everything, another dark romantic thriller published by Penguin Random House, and the two titles are sold together as a box set. The author's readership, built largely through BookTok recommendation videos, has translated into bestseller-chart placement and industry recognition — the kind of built-in audience that studios look for when acquiring adaptation rights.
