Billie Eilish Makes Film Debut as Focus Features Wraps The Bell Jar
Billie Eilish has finished her first feature film role, leading the cast of Focus Features' adaptation of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, which has now wrapped production. Eilish plays Esther Greenwood, the novel's protagonist — a young woman navigating a breakdown in 1950s America, a part that has drawn actresses to Plath's only novel since its publication in 1963. Sarah Polley directs from her own adapted screenplay. The Bell Jar is Polley's first feature since Women Talking, the film that earned her the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay in 2023. That film, adapted from Miriam Toews's novel, established Polley's approach to literary adaptation: faithful to structure, spare in style, driven by ensemble performance rather than spectacle. She brings the same toolkit to Plath's novel, a first-person narrative whose power rests almost entirely on Esther's interior voice.
The film is produced by Plan B, Studiocanal, and Joy Coalition — three companies with deep roots in prestige literary adaptation. Plan B, founded by Brad Pitt, has backed titles from 12 Years a Slave to Blonde. Studiocanal, the European studio owned by Canal+ and Vivendi, finances and distributes across the continent. Joy Coalition, a newer outfit focused on inclusion in front of and behind the camera, rounds out the producing team.
For Eilish, the leap from concert stages to a period drama is a meaningful one. She has won multiple Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for her songwriting — including the Oscar for the James Bond theme "No Time to Die" — but has never carried a dramatic role on screen. Playing Esther Greenwood places her in a lineage of literary heroines that studios approach with caution, given how closely readers hold the source material.
Focus Features has not yet announced a release date. The studio, a division of NBCUniversal, typically positions prestige literary adaptations in the autumn awards corridor, though scheduling will depend on post-production timelines and the competitive landscape for the 2027 calendar.
