Annie Gonzalez to Play Mayra Guillén in Vanessa Guillén Biopic
Annie Gonzalez has been cast as the lead in an upcoming biopic of slain U.S. Army Specialist Vanessa Guillén, playing Mayra Guillén, Vanessa's older sister, according to Deadline.
The as-yet-untitled film will tell Vanessa Guillén's story from Mayra's point of view. Mayra Guillén has signed on as an executive producer, and the project is being developed in collaboration with the Guillén family.
Vanessa Guillén was a U.S. Army recruit whose 2020 disappearance and murder at Fort Hood, Texas, sparked nationwide outcry and calls for reform within the U.S. military. After being assigned to the base, Guillén told friends and family she was sexually harassed by a superior but did not report it officially, fearing retaliation. She was bludgeoned to death by fellow soldier Aaron David Robinson, and had been missing for more than two months before some of her remains were found buried along the Leon River. Robinson fled Fort Hood after learning of the discovery and fatally shot himself as law enforcement moved in to apprehend him.
Jolene Rodriguez produces through Broken English Productions, and Jorge Xolalpa produces through Mighty Aphrodite Pictures. Xolalpa, the founder and CEO of Mighty Aphrodite, will also direct the film, as listed on Production List. He signed an exclusive option agreement with Mayra Guillén giving Mighty Aphrodite the right to develop, package, pitch, negotiate and market the authorised biopic, as Latin Heat reported on 17 August 2026. That option deal was facilitated by the Palomera Group, led by Alejandra Palomera, and Levy Law PLLC, the legal team representing Mayra Guillén.
Natalie Khawam and Alejandra Palomera join Mayra Guillén as executive producers. The production team was in the process of identifying a director to lead the project at the time of the casting announcement — a role Xolalpa is now set to fill himself.
Gonzalez comes to the project with a track record in biographical and family-centred drama. In 2023, she executive produced and starred as Mexican singer Jenni Rivera in the ViX film Jenni. That same year, she portrayed Judy Montañez, wife of Richard Montañez, in Eva Longoria's Flamin' Hot. She was also featured in the ensemble cast of Relationship Goals, an Amazon MGM Studios Original directed by Linda Mendoza and led by Kelly Rowland and Cliff 'Method Man' Smith. Gonzalez will next star in Wild Ones, from first-time feature filmmaker Manuel Figueroa. She is represented by Innovative Artists and Granderson Des Rochers.
For Gonzalez, the role places her at the centre of a story that reverberated far beyond the military. For the Guillén family, it brings a measure of authorship: Mayra Guillén's executive-producer credit and the family's collaboration mean the film carries their perspective alongside the dramatisation.
