Spain's Ministry of Digital Transformation and Civil Service will become the sole sponsor of industry events at the San Sebastián Film Festival, backing the programme with a €500,000 ($580,000) grant. The festival runs September 18–26 in the Basque coastal city, with the industry strand now woven directly into a broader government plan to position Spain as Europe's audiovisual hub. Variety

The money funds two centrepiece events. The Creative Investors' Conference, co-organised with CAA Media Finance — a major Hollywood talent and sports agency — runs September 22–23 and is now in its fifth edition. Executives from companies including Acme AI & VFX, Black Bear International, Media Capital Technologies, MUBI, Neon, Studiocanal and Sumerian Pictures are expected to attend. The second event, the Conference on Leading the Audiovisual of the Future, is organised by the Ministry itself and scheduled for September 20. Variety; Screen Daily

A new tech pitching session called the Zinemaldia Startup Challenge will see ten projects built on AI, 3D printing and mobile apps compete for a best Spanish project prize raised to €30,000 ($34,800). San Sebastián Festival; Variety

San Sebastián has been growing as an industry marketplace. Festival delegates hit 2,411 last year, an all-time record. The Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, one of its long-running industry fixtures, has drawn filmmakers including Pablo Larraín, Benjamín Naishtat and Celina Murga. Variety

The sponsorship forms part of the second phase of Spain's Audiovisual Hub of Europe Plan, launched in 2021 with a €1.6 billion ($1.85 billion) budget financed by Next GenerationEU recovery funds. The second phase makes €1.712 billion available in financial instruments to bolster the Spanish audiovisual sector. A state-backed venture capital fund, SETT — the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation, an investment arm of the Ministry — has invested around €215 million ($252 million) into Spain's film, TV, video game and technology sectors, sparking about €230 million ($269.1 million) in matching private investment. Spanish Minister for Digital Transformation Oscar López said the Ministry's commitment reinforces infrastructure strategic to the Spanish audiovisual world. Festival director José Luis Rebordinos said the sponsorship would give a greater boost to activities such as the Zinemaldia & Technology programme and the Creative Investors' Conference. Variety

For a festival already drawing record industry traffic, the government's direct involvement adds a layer of state financing behind the meetings where films find their money. The Creative Investors' Conference sits inside a broader package called Spanish Screenings: Financing & Tech, which pairs the financing conference with technology-focused events. Whether that translates into more productions greenlit at San Sebastián this September is a question the deal sheets will answer. The framework is certainly in place.
