The first English-subtitled trailer for Godzilla Minus Zero opens with a line that settles any question about the king of monsters: "We didn't finish the job like we thought." Deadline reported the trailer's release on 8 September 2026.

The film is Takashi Yamazaki's sequel to Godzilla Minus One, his 2023 hit that won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and grossed $113.9 million worldwide. That first film followed a former kamikaze pilot confronting Godzilla in postwar Japan. The sequel moves the clock forward two years to 1949, with Ryunosuke Kamiki returning as Kōichi Shikishima. The returning cast reads like a reunion: Minami Hamabe as Noriko, alongside Yuki Yamada, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Miou Tanaka. Masami Nagasawa joins the ensemble as Ms. Aoyama. Yamazaki again serves as director, screenwriter and visual effects artist, the same triple role he held on the Oscar-winning predecessor, according to the official Godzilla site.

Toho and GKIDS first unveiled a teaser back in July. The full theatrical trailer confirms that Godzilla was not fully destroyed and offers a glimpse of the latest kaiju design. The trailer also shows the creature arriving in New York City, a detail Variety flagged when footage first surfaced in April.

Godzilla Minus Zero holds a production distinction: it is the first Japanese film shot for Imax. The format, which uses large-format cameras and towering screens for higher-resolution imagery, has been a staple of Hollywood blockbusters for years but had not previously been adopted by a Japanese production.

The release calendar is set. Godzilla Minus Zero has its world premiere on 26 September at the New York Film Festival, a prestigious slot that doubles as a launchpad for awards-season conversation. It opens in North American theatres on 6 November. The official Godzilla website hosts the trailer and a newly revealed poster ahead of that date.

For fans of Godzilla Minus One, the sequel carries familiar ingredients — the same director-star-visual-effects team, a continuation of Shikishima's story, and Toho's handcrafted approach to the monster rather than the Hollywood CGI pipeline. The New York City setting and the Imax first suggest Yamazaki is widening the canvas. Whether the box office matches the $113.9 million the first film earned is a question for November's opening weekend.
