Hewett and Reid Power Into US Open Wheelchair Doubles Semi-Finals
Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid moved within two wins of a sixth US Open wheelchair doubles title, beating Stephane Houdet and Zhenxu Ji 6-3 6-1 in their opening match at Flushing Meadows.
The British pair, top seeds in the draw, progressed straight to the semi-finals with the victory. They will face Japan's Tokito Oda and Argentina's Gustavo Fernandez next — the same duo they beat in last year's final, when Hewett and Reid took the 2025 title 6-1 2-6 [10-6] in a match tiebreak, the shortened deciding format used in some doubles matches. Hewett, 28, and Reid, 34, have won 25 Grand Slam doubles titles together. Their record at this tournament runs deeper still: according to the LTA, they have now reached ten consecutive US Open men's wheelchair doubles finals. Greg Slade and Heath Davidson had a far harder day. They lost 6-0 6-0 to top seeds Niels Vink and Guy Sasson — a pair who have won all three Grand Slam tournaments in 2026 and the last six majors in a row. What gives the Fernandez-Oda rematch its edge is the history. Hewett and Reid have now beaten that pairing in back-to-back major finals, at the 2025 US Open and the 2026 French Open. Oda and Fernandez know exactly what is required to topple the British pair. They just have not managed it on the biggest occasions.
For Hewett and Reid, the path is simple: win two more matches, and a sixth US Open title is theirs.
