Mia Wasikowska brings Agata the Writer to Venice
Mia Wasikowska has brought a Sarajevo-set story of a blocked writer to Venice.
She stars as Agata in "Agata the Writer," the debut feature from Polish-born director Kuba Dorabialski, which premiered at the festival, Variety reported on 12 September 2026. Wasikowska also carries an executive-producer credit, a senior role often held by a key creative supporter or backer.
Agata is a Polish-Australian writer who arrives in Sarajevo to write about the war. She is stuck. She appears opposite Vedrana Božinović, with dialogue in English and Bosnian, according to festival records La Biennale. The film runs 95 minutes and is listed by La Biennale di Venezia as an Australian production.
The film is a Whitefalk Films and Produktion Productions production. International sales, meaning the licensing of distribution rights to buyers in different countries, are handled by French company MMM Film Sales, Variety reported.
Wasikowska said she was excited to make a film that did not follow a typical narrative structure. Dorabialski said he was interested in the idea of Slavic identity outside Eastern Europe. Both spoke to Variety in Venice around the premiere.
The film was programmed in Biennale Cinema 2026 and screened in Venice on 6 September at 16:45, according to festival listings La Biennale. For a first feature, the festival slot puts the film in front of international buyers and programmers who decide what travels beyond the Lido.
