Mahershala Ali brings father-on-the-run thriller to TIFF
Mahershala Ali premiered his new crime thriller Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother on Sept. 12 at the Toronto International Film Festival, with Amazon MGM set to release the film The Hollywood Reporter.
He plays Latif. He is a devout Muslim contract killer who drives across Houston to protect his three children after the death of his wife, a role that puts Ali at the centre of almost every scene.
Latif is forced to keep moving. His children travel with him, played by Adia and Jahleel Kamara HuffPost, while John Cho co-stars as Haun Yoon, an Army veteran and militant church leader.
Ali said the part answered a long-held wish. It checked an action, movement and physicality box that he had been yearning to invest energy in The Hollywood Reporter.
The film is directed by Bassam Tariq. The two men know each other well from Marvel's Blade, the vampire film they were previously set to make together before it was removed from Disney's lineup in 2024.
Ali officially walked away from Blade in July. His next television job is already in motion, with season two of HBO's Task having started filming in July.
Audiences will not wait long to see the new film. It will play in select theatres from September 25, with a wider release to follow in October Orion Pictures.
What makes this stand out for festival watchers is the reunion. After years attached to a big franchise film that never reached cameras, Ali and Tariq have returned with a smaller, character-led thriller built around a father and his children on the road.
