Babies premieres at Toronto with Kendrick and Rogen as couple weighing parenthood
Babies, the comedy written and directed by Lauren Miller Rogen, had its first public screening on 12 September at the 2026 Toronto Film Festival, Vanity Fair reported.
The film stars Anna Kendrick and Seth Rogen as Annie and Aaron, a happily married couple with no children of their own, according to Deadline. The story follows their debate over whether to bring a child into the world. That question shapes the whole film.
Their home life changes when Eliza moves in. Kate Berlant plays Eliza, who leaves her husband Luke, played by Dan Stevens, and arrives with her young daughter to stay with Aaron and Annie.
The circle widens further with Issa Rae as a working mother. Her character has a teenage daughter, another baby on the way and a plan to start a gallery with Annie. Zach Cherry plays a steady, reliable father, a contrast to Stevens as an unreliable co-parent.
There is another thread in the film. It includes a sick-parent story linked to Miller Rogen's experience with her late mother's Alzheimer's disease. That same family history inspired Hilarity for Charity, the non-profit organisation she runs with Seth Rogen.
For audiences, this means a story about more than babies. It is about adults weighing parenthood, friendship and who looks after whom.
On the business side, Babies is Miller Rogen's second film as a feature director. The distribution rights were picked up by Roadside Attractions and Vertical ahead of Toronto, Deadline reported in August, meaning the two companies will handle putting the film into cinemas. The festival run continues in Europe. Babies is set for its European premiere at the Zurich festival.
Kendrick arrives with a familiar credit. She is an Oscar nominee who appeared in Up in the Air, as listed by TIFF. TIFF lists Babies as a comedy by Miller Rogen.
