South Australia has confirmed the first H5 avian influenza death in an endangered Australian sea lion, found dead at Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island. The Guardian State environment minister Emily Bourke announced the finding on 13 September 2026.

The animal had been recovering from a shark attack. Laboratory testing found H5 infection caused its death. No other known sea lion deaths had been recorded at Seal Bay at the time of the announcement.

Seal Bay holds an estimated 800 Australian sea lions. It is the third-largest single colony for the species.

To understand why colony size counts, it helps to know how disease teams think about density. Higher density can mean more contact between animals, and colony size affects how practical carcass removal and decontamination, meaning cleaning of contaminated surfaces, are in practice.

Population estimates differ but point to a small total. Earlier assessments cited about 12,000 animals remaining. More recent estimates place the total at less than 10,000. About 85% of the population occurs in South Australia. The population was already declining by 2% per year before H5 arrived.

The reason those baseline numbers matter is buffering capacity. Pinnipeds, the group that includes seals and sea lions, in a small, fragmented and declining population have limited ability to absorb added deaths of adults and juveniles.

Other detections have been reported around the region. H5 has been detected in wild seabirds on Kangaroo Island. South Australia reported 11 additional suspected H5 cases, all in wild seabirds, after testing of samples in Adelaide. The state's second confirmed H5 detection was in a giant petrel collected from Hardwicke Bay on Yorke Peninsula. A long-nosed fur seal sampled at The Pages Conservation Park near Kangaroo Island returned a positive H5 result on confirmatory testing at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP). Australia's first confirmed H5 case in a mammal was a seal found dead at Beachport in South Australia. Mass bird deaths believed linked to H5N1 were detected on islands hosting a large sea lion breeding colony, and H5 has separately been detected in a greater crested tern in Booderee National Park within the Jervis Bay Territory.

Close to 70 on-ground H5 projects are underway, including support for Kangaroo Island's Australian sea lions and the Christmas Island frigatebird. The broader context here is contact between colonial seabirds, birds that nest in large groups, and seals and sea lions that share habitat. Scientists had warned H5 could cause "carnage" for Australia's seal and sea lion populations. That warning reflected prior H5N1-associated mass mortality in pinnipeds elsewhere and the vulnerability of otariids, the group of eared seals and sea lions, that haul out, breed and forage near infected seabirds and contaminated surfaces.

Looking at what this means for management, three questions now dominate. First, whether Seal Bay is spillover from local seabird circulation or wider coastal dispersal via foraging seals and petrels. Second, whether carcass surveillance is sensitive enough to detect early clustering in a remote, dispersed breeding network. Third, how interventions developed for poultry and wild-bird outbreaks translate to endangered marine mammals, where culling is not an option and vaccination, movement controls and site closures carry different ecological and logistical constraints. The answers will determine whether this first confirmed sea lion mortality stays an isolated spillover or becomes the first signal of sustained spread among pinnipeds.
