Melissa Rivers returns to the red carpet for Emmys pre-show
Melissa Rivers is returning to red-carpet coverage after 20 years away, joining the Emmys pre-show for interviews and commentary.
She will appear on "CNN & Variety Red Carpet Live: TV's Biggest Night," the live programme shown before the awards ceremony, Variety reported on 13 September. The special is organised as a joint broadcast by CNN and Variety.
The pre-show will stream live from 5 p.m. ET on Monday, Sept. 14 on CNN.com/Watch and on the CNN app for CNN streaming subscribers. Viewers do not need cable to watch on the website, but app viewing is for CNN streaming subscribers.
Rivers will broadcast alongside Variety co-president and co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh and CNN correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister. CNN lists Setoodeh as host of the special and describes Rivers as an entertainment host and fashion expert, according to a CNN Press Room notice published on 10 September.
Rivers rose to fame reporting from outside awards shows with her late mother, comedian Joan Rivers. The pair worked for E! and the TV Guide Channel, and ended their red-carpet association in 2007.
After Joan Rivers died in 2014, Melissa Rivers continued hosting E!'s "Fashion Police," a talk show about celebrity outfits, until its final episode in 2017. She told Variety it is her first time back doing red-carpet coverage in 20 years.
She spoke to Variety a few days before the hosting gig about wanting to bring fun back to red-carpet coverage. For fans, this means more focus on conversation and humour on the carpet, with Rivers conducting interviews and adding commentary through the live broadcast.
