Valencia Sack Corberan and Gourlay After Winless Start
Valencia have sacked head coach Carlos Corberan and football chief executive Ron Gourlay after a winless start left them bottom of La Liga, Spain's top division.
The club confirmed the double departure on 13 September. Valencia have one point from five league matches this season, according to BBC Sport.
One point from five games. Bottom of the table. The board acted fast.
Valencia B coach Oscar Sanchez will step up as interim boss, a temporary appointment while the club searches for a permanent successor. Corberan's first-team coaching staff will also depart.
Corberan arrived in December 2024 from West Bromwich Albion, then in England's second tier. Valencia made an official approach for him in that month before bringing him to Spain. The team were second-bottom of La Liga when he walked in.
He turned that season around. Valencia finished 12th, comfortably clear of the drop zone, and supporters hoped for a calmer second year. It has not come. Five games without a win ended his tenure.
Gourlay arrived in the same December as Corberan. He had previously worked as Chelsea chief executive and spent time with West Bromwich Albion. Four other members of the football leadership group will leave with him: Lisandro Isei, Hans Gillhaus, Andres Zamora and Malek Shafei.
Gourlay had been the public face of the club's football project. He spoke to the media at Mestalla, Valencia's home stadium, to review the summer transfer window. Back in February, he told the club's own media channel that Valencia needed stability and had to keep working the way they were working, according to Valencia CF.
Whoever comes next walks into a familiar pattern. He will be Valencia's 18th permanent head coach since 2012. That number explains why many supporters greet managerial change with a shrug as much as a cheer.
For fans, this means another reset and another new voice on the touchline. Ninety minutes can still lift a whole city in Valencia, and the brief for the next boss is simple. Find a win quickly, give Mestalla something to feel together again, and climb away from the bottom before the gap grows.
