Tom Tiffany Survives Emergency Lake Landing: What Happened and What's Next

Rep. Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin suffered minor injuries on Saturday night after his aircraft made an emergency landing in Lake Wausau. Tiffany is Wisconsin's Republican nominee for governor.
He was returning from a dinner in La Crosse County when the plane lost power while approaching Wausau Downtown Airport, according to BBC. The aircraft was a single-engine Beechcraft K35, also known as a Bonanza — a small plane with one propeller engine. A mechanical issue forced it down in the lake. Tiffany and the pilot were the only two people on board.
The Marathon County Sheriff's Office received the 911 report of the crash at 20:49 local time. Tiffany and the pilot had called 911 after landing. They exited the sinking plane and swam to a shallow area to await rescue by boat. A Wausau Fire Department airboat — a flat-bottomed boat built for shallow water — rescued them at 21:05 local time.
Both men were sent to the hospital with minor injuries, as reported by Wausau Pilot & Review. Tiffany received a small cut over his right eye. The pilot also sustained minor injuries. Sixteen minutes elapsed between the initial report and the rescue.
The plane remained in Lake Wausau as emergency crews worked to remove it. The Federal Aviation Administration, which oversees U.S. air safety, and the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates transport accidents, will investigate the incident.
The broader context here is that the timeline is now fairly clear, but the cause is not. The facts establish how the occupants survived. They do not establish why power was lost. That distinction matters when reading early descriptions of a mechanical issue.
In my view, readers should keep two separate tracks in mind. One is medical, where hospital evaluation after a crash is often precautionary. The other is investigative, where federal teams will examine the aircraft and the circumstances of the flight. Tiffany's dual role as sitting congressman and candidate for governor ensures attention, but it does not change that sequence.
