A Moroccan detective story first published in 2001 is headed for cinemas.

Hollywood Ventures Group, Canadian financier-producer Big Picture Cinema Group and Moroccan company Pink Sheep Productions are partnering to turn The Final Bet into a feature film, as reported by Variety. The project is being shopped to buyers and backers at the Toronto film market, where producers pitch unfinished films to secure sales and funding.

The novel comes from Moroccan author and award-winning screenwriter Abdelilah Hamdouchi, Variety reported. Set in Casablanca, it follows a young man framed for the murder of his wealthy wife as he fights to prove his innocence amid corruption, romance and judicial intrigue. It is touted as the first Arabic detective novel to be translated into English.

Hollywood Ventures co-founder Glenn Gainor is adapting the book for the screen with Taha Benghalem, Variety reported. Gainor launched Hollywood Ventures as a production venture, while Benghalem works across writing and producing on the Moroccan side.

The producing team spans three countries. Benghalem and Seloua El Gouni will produce for Pink Sheep Productions, and Nelly Kim will produce for Hollywood Ventures Group, Variety reported. Big Picture's Jayce Barreiro, Graem Luis and Michael Aleong will co-finance and produce, with Barreiro serving as president and head of production at the Canadian company. Nabeel Laher, Kiran Kaur and Nicholas Wittcoff of Hollywood Ventures Group are attached as executive producers, a credit often given to senior financiers and deal-makers.

Shoot is planned for 2027. The partners are targeting a start of production next year, Variety reported.

What makes this stand out is the chain behind it. A Casablanca story, a Moroccan production partner on the ground, Canadian financing and an American venture taking it to market. For audiences, that means the usual long road remains from market pitch to casting and cameras before any release date appears on the calendar.
