Jersey Bulls Women suffer first league defeat at Sutton

Jersey Bulls Women have lost a league game for the first time.

The Channel Island side fell 3-0 away to Sutton United Under-23s in the Surrey Premier Division of the South East Counties Women's Football League, as reported by BBC Sport. It was their second defeat in eight days.

The sides were level at the break. Sutton settled it after half-time.

Rachel Marlow opened the scoring within three minutes of the restart, flicking home a free kick (a set-piece awarded after a foul). Neriyah Anderson-Bailey made it 2-0 from the edge of the penalty box after a corner (a restart given when the defence puts the ball behind its own goal). Maya Anderson added the third to complete the win.

Jersey arrived in this division as champions. Last season, in their first campaign in the English football pyramid, the linked system of leagues that connects grassroots football to the top flight, they won every league game to take the Surrey Division One title and earn promotion.

That perfect run ended the previous week. A 3-1 loss away at Bognor Regis Town in the first qualifying round of the FA Cup, the national knockout competition where smaller clubs enter in the early rounds, was the first defeat in the team's history, according to BBC Sport.

This Sutton defeat followed straight on. An Under-23 side, a team for players aged under 23 to prepare them for senior football, has now handed Jersey a first league defeat.

What makes this stand out is how new this feeling is. Jersey went from winning every week to losing twice in a row, and both defeats came away from home.

For fans, this means context matters. The Surrey Premier Division is a higher level, with stronger and deeper squads than Jersey faced last season. Two away defeats are a harsh welcome, but they do not undo an unbeaten championship year.
