AUPresses opens fundraiser to bring three Ukrainian publishers to Frankfurt

Three Ukrainian publishers have a funded path to Frankfurt this autumn.

The Association of University Presses (AUPresses), the membership body for university-based publishers, has launched a GoFundMe fundraiser, an online appeal collecting many small donations, to help them attend its meeting at the 2026 Frankfurt Book Fair, according to Publishing Perspectives. The fair is the annual trade gathering in Frankfurt where publishers negotiate rights, meaning permission to publish books in other languages and territories. The appeal speaks to colleagues and readers who want those publishers in the room.

The first $6,000 raised is earmarked for three places. It will cover Ukrainian publishers attending the International Convention of University Presses, the dedicated session for university presses, on 9 October. Three guests, one session, one city.

University presses work differently from commercial houses. They are attached to universities and research institutions and publish scholarly and specialist books, often for libraries and classrooms as well as general readers. A meeting like the convention gives their staff a chance to compare notes on production, distribution and rights.

That date carries weight. The 9 October convention is the first reconvening after a seven-year hiatus. It is listed as the eighth edition, held on a Friday afternoon.

Frankfurter Buchmesse 2026 runs from 7 to 10 October, according to Frankfurter Buchmesse. The convention appears in that timetable in the fair's programme listing. In plain terms, it sits inside the larger fair week.

Any money given beyond the opening $6,000 will take a different path. It will be donated to the Ukrainian Book Institute to support Ukraine's book industry. AUPresses set out that two-step plan in its official announcement titled "AUPresses Creates Crowdfunding Opportunity to Help Ukrainian Publishers," published on 8 September, according to AUPresses.

What makes this stand out is the size of the ask. No endowment is involved. A short online drive pays for flights, beds and badges. Then the surplus keeps working at home through the Book Institute.
