Ferran Torres fires PSG to first Ligue 1 win at Brest

Paris Saint-Germain finally have a league win. They beat Brest 1-0 away on Sunday 13 September 2026.

Ferran Torres scored the only goal after four minutes. He found space 20 yards out and finished low to settle a tight Matchday 4 contest in Ligue 1, France's top division PSG.

It was PSG's first league win of the 2026-27 season Reuters. The defending champions had started badly. They sat five points behind Lille, Monaco and Rennes after four games.

Torres is making a habit of decisive goals. He joined PSG from Barcelona in the summer of 2026 after scoring the winner in the World Cup final. He now has six goals for his new club, and remarkably all six of his efforts on target this season have gone in The Guardian.

He was replaced by Mika Godts in the 77th minute in Brest, his job done.

The win ended a run of five games without a victory against French opponents. That run included defeat to Monaco the previous weekend, when Stanis Idumbo beat goalkeeper Matvey Safonov at his near post.

Context matters here. PSG had thrashed Slovan Bratislava 6-1 in the Champions League in midweek. Slovan boss Yaya Touré called the holders a "machine" after that defeat. Torres scored a hat-trick in that European opener.

Brest made PSG work for it. The home side created the better chances on expected goals, a measure of chance quality, but took none of them.

Safonov kept the three points. He saved a header from Kamory Doumbia and tipped a curled effort from Pathé Mboup around the post late on.

Manager Luis Enrique was not impressed, even in victory. He had called PSG's league start "catastrophic" in the week before the game. Afterwards he said: "For me, it was the worst of our four [Ligue 1] matches, even if we won."

What makes this stand out is the contrast. PSG look ruthless in Europe and ragged at home. One early strike and two big saves papered over another nervous league display.

For fans, this means relief rather than momentum. The gap at the top is still there. But a first win stops the noise, at least for a week.
