Alice Diop Stages First Exhibition for Miu Miu in Paris
French director Alice Diop will stage her first exhibition in Paris in October.
The show is titled “Geste de Consolation.” That translates as “Gesture of Consolation” in English. It is organised with Miu Miu, the fashion house, as part of its partnership with Art Basel Paris, the art fair, according to details reported by WWD.
The venue is the Palais d’Iéna in Paris. The building is modernist in style and has hosted Miu Miu’s Art Basel Paris projects before. This edition will be open to the public from Oct. 21 to Oct. 25.
It runs for five days. The work is organised across four spaces inside the building. Visitors move from one space to the next to follow the sequence.
Diop is working across film, photography, sculpture, poetry, dance, music and performance. All seven forms are part of the plan. Each space holds a different combination.
The starting point is her short film “Fragments for Venus.” It screened at the Venice Film Festival, the film festival in Italy. It was made as part of Miu Miu Women’s Tales, the house’s short-film series that commissions women directors.
Diop has also chosen works by other artists to sit alongside her own. The list includes Zanele Muholi, Mary Lee Bendolph and Simone Leigh. Each brings a different medium into the four rooms.
The route ends with one work. It is Leigh’s bronze sculpture “Sentinel (Mami Wata).” Bronze here means cast metal, made to last outdoors and in.
For visitors, this means one visit covers many forms. A short film sits near photography. Dance and music share space with sculpture and poetry.
Entry is free. Guided tours, walks led by a guide, can be booked online. Registration opens on miumiu.com from Oct. 8.
Miu Miu has been the official partner of the public programme of Art Basel Paris since 2024. That programme covers free events staged around the fair and open to all. Its first project in the role was Tales & Tellers, which ran at the Palais d’Iéna from Oct. 16 to Oct. 20, 2024, with a preview on Oct. 15. The house then returned for a second year with the show “30 Blizzards.”
