iOS 27 Lands September 14: New Siri AI, Supported iPhones, and How to Prepare

iOS 27 will be available as a free update on Monday, September 14, expected at around 10:00 a.m. MacRumors

The release follows new hardware by days. Apple introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, alongside the iPhone Duo, Apple Watch Ultra 4, Apple Watch Series 12 with an all-new Health Sensing System, AirPods 5 with open-ear Active Noise Cancellation, and new health and fitness features that use Apple Intelligence.

For phones already in use, the main change is Siri. Apple says iOS 27 includes an all-new Siri AI powered by Apple Intelligence, with a new Siri app, a more readable design, faster performance, and new child safety features. Engadget

That part of the update only runs on newer phones. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI in iOS 27 require iPhone 16 models or later. The same Siri AI features were released for developer testing in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27. One featured use is splitting bills with Apple Cash and Apple Intelligence.

Before installing, check storage and power. Leave 18 to 25GB of free space for the download and temporary files. Fifty percent battery is enough to finish, but keep the iPhone plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi during the install.

Back up first. In iCloud, go to Settings > Apple Account > iCloud > iCloud Backup > Back Up Now, or back up to a Mac or Windows PC. Have your Apple ID login ready so you are not locked out. If you are on iOS 26.6, install that indexing update first. It prepares Siri data, much like sorting files before a move, to make the step to iOS 27 smoother.

There are two ways to update. For a manual update, open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update, and wait on that screen for iOS 27 to appear. For automatic updates, go to Settings > General > Software Update > Automatic Updates. With Automatically Install turned on, the phone will not update right away. It waits until it is charging and on Wi-Fi overnight.

Automatic installs take longer to reach everyone. The notice can arrive days or weeks after release. That delay is normal. It spreads network load and crash reports.

You can also update from a computer. With the Finder, connect the device, select it, click General, then Check for Update, then Download and Update. With iTunes, connect the device, click the device button in the toolbar, click the Summary tab, then Check for Update. iPhone and iPad can download and prepare updates over Wi-Fi or cellular. If an update will not install, delete the waiting file at Settings > General > [Device] Storage, select the update, then Delete Update.

The broader context here is managing a large move, not only adding features. Pre-indexing in 26.6, a large temporary footprint, overnight charging for automatic installs, and a multi-week rollout point to major changes in on-device models and indexes. For families and work fleets, that argues for updating a secondary device first and confirming the backup and Apple Account access before updating a primary phone. In my experience watching my kids adopt each new phone system, those small, practical gains, a clearer screen, a faster local assistant, and splitting a bill in Apple Cash, add up in daily use.
