Rob Keogh to Retire After 16 Seasons with Northamptonshire
Northamptonshire all-rounder Rob Keogh will retire from professional cricket at the end of the season because of a back injury.
The county confirmed the decision after the 34-year-old sought advice from medical specialists over a lower back problem. It closes a 16-year first-team career spent entirely at Wantage Road, as reported by BBC Sport.
Keogh came through the Northamptonshire academy and made his debut in August 2010. He went on to make 315 appearances across all formats, as an all-rounder who bats and bowls to first-team standard.
The numbers tell a story of steady weight. He passed 10,000 all-format runs for the county in 2025 and now stands on 10,140. Only 30 players in Northamptonshire history have scored more.
His career-best innings came in 2013. He made 221 against Hampshire that season. A decade later he was still carrying the batting, finishing 2023 as the county's highest run-scorer with 780 runs, according to the ECB.
He hit the winning runs. That single stroke secured the Steelbacks, Northamptonshire's T20 side, their second T20 Blast title in 2016. The Blast is England's county 20-over competition, all pace and noise, and Keogh held his nerve at the finish.
He also played his part in two promotions to Division One of the County Championship, the four-day first-class competition, in 2013 and 2019. The county awarded him his county cap, the mark of established first-team status, in 2019. A testimonial year, a traditional season of events to honour long service, followed in 2024.
Off the field, Keogh has spoken openly about his struggles with mental health, telling BBC News in 2025 that the outside world had previously been told he had a back injury. His retirement this season follows specialist advice on a lower back issue.
What makes this stand out is loyalty. One academy graduate. One county. Sixteen seasons of four-day grind and T20 sprints. For fans, that is the shared inheritance: not just the trophy in 2016 or the 221, but a player who stayed.
