Jon Hamm brings true-life thriller American Hostage to Toronto
A live radio interview with a hostage-taker sits at the heart of American Hostage, the Jon Hamm thriller that took its cast to Toronto.
The team gathered for the Deadline TIFF Studio on 14 September 2026, three days after the show's first festival screening. Hamm appeared alongside Giovanni Ribisi, William Jackson Harper, Kristoffer Polaha, writer and creator Shawn Ryan and Eileen Myers, according to Deadline.
The series tells the true story of an Indianapolis radio reporter pulled into a high-stakes standoff when a local man takes a bank employee hostage and demands to be interviewed live on air. Its first TIFF screening was held at 11:40 a.m. on Thursday, 11 September at Scotiabank Theatre. The festival slot was billed as its world premiere.
American Hostage is built as a thriller anthology series, meaning each instalment tells a self-contained story. The first instalment runs for eight episodes and is based on the first season of the scripted podcast of the same name, according to Deadline. Ryan created the television version. MGM+ is the studio behind it and ordered the series with Hamm attached to star.
The casting chain was assembled last year. Ribisi was tapped as co-lead opposite Hamm, while Harper was set as a lead opposite Hamm and Mireille Enos. Polaha also features in the ensemble that travelled to Toronto.
Viewers will not all find it in the same place. In the United States it will premiere exclusively on MGM+, and in Canada it will premiere on Crave, according to Deadline. Internationally it will roll out on MGM+ International after sales to HBO Max, Stan and Movistar Plus+, according to Deadline.
For fans, this means one story with a clear end. Eight episodes. A real-life starting point. And a new setting and cast expected if the anthology continues.
