Screen Brasil Opens Second Round to Back Four Films Abroad

Four Brazilian feature films will get cash help to reach cinemas abroad as Screen Brasil opens its second funding round.
The programme was created by Brazil's tourism board Embratur and Projeto Paradiso, the support programme of the Olga Rabinovich Institute, to strengthen international distribution of Brazilian fiction features, according to Variety. The second edition expands the slate from three films to four.
It will run in two selection cycles. Two international distribution proposals will be chosen in each cycle. The first cycle takes applications from July 2 to Oct. 2 for films released between 2024 and 2026.
The grant is $15,000 per film. It is earmarked for the practical costs of a foreign release, including posters, translation and subtitling, marketing, trailers and advertising buys, Variety reported.
Applications must be filed in English. Only the international sales agent, the company that sells a film's rights territory by territory and holds its commercial rights, can submit.
The first edition shows how the money is used. France's Lucky Number received $15,000 to support sales of Gabriel Mascaro's 'The Blue Trail' to Australia and Taiwan. Those two releases have now concluded.
Two recipients were named at the Marché du Film, the business market held alongside the Cannes Film Festival, in May. They are Rafaela Camelo's 'The Nature of Invisible Things,' handled internationally by Italy's The Open Reel for Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and Priscilla Kellen's animated film 'Papaya,' handled by Belgium's Best Friend Forever for Portugal, Germany and Mexico, according to Variety.
German distributor GM Films will release 'The Nature of Invisible Things' in theatres under the local title 'Sophia und Gloria – Ein Sommermärchen'.
What makes this stand out for viewers is the scale. Small sums pay for subtitles, trailers and posters. Those are often the items that decide whether a festival favourite ever reaches a local screen.
