Germany's Oscar Entry 'Everytime' Bows in Toronto After Cannes Win
Germany's Oscar submission Everytime arrives in Toronto for its North American premiere.
Austrian director Sandra Wollner spoke to Variety about the film ahead of the screening. It is her third feature. Toronto programmers placed it in Centrepiece, a 54-title section for award winners and anticipated new work from around the world, according to TIFF.
The story follows a grieving mother, her younger daughter and her late daughter's boyfriend. Guilt, grief and forgiveness surface during a family holiday, in TIFF's description. Birgit Minichmayr plays the mother. Tristan Lopez plays the boyfriend. Lotte Shirin Keiling plays the younger daughter.
Wollner is credited as director and screenplay writer, according to the Festival de Cannes. Gregory Oke served as cinematographer. The production filmed in Berlin and Tenerife and is listed as an Austria-Germany production.
Everytime opened its festival run in Un Certain Regard, the Cannes Film Festival's second-tier selection. It received a standing ovation at its Cannes premiere and then won the Un Certain Regard Prize in 2026, the Festival confirmed. Reuters described it as an understated family drama about grief.
The prizes kept coming. Everytime won the Grand Prize at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Germany then selected it as its official Oscar submission. TIFF lists a Centrepiece screening for Thursday 10 at 11:30 AM at Scotia 3.
The rollout is already in motion. Eksystent Filmverleih Kijas released the film in German cinemas in August. Sales agent Charades has sold it to more than 30 territories worldwide. In North America, 1-2 Special is handling distribution, with a theatrical release planned for early 2027.
New York and Vancouver are next on the festival calendar. For audiences outside Germany, those dates are the first chance to see a film that has moved quickly from Cannes to the awards race.
