Valve Wanted a Cheaper Steam Frame, Until Memory Prices Intervened

Valve wanted the Steam Frame to sell for less than $1,059, but global RAM and storage prices made that target unreachable. The details were disclosed in developer comments published Sept. 14, 2026. The Verge
Developer Jeremy Selan said Valve set out to make a far more affordable headset and "fought hard to get it even to this price". The internal target was below the previous Valve Index, which cost $999 at launch and required a direct plug into a PC.

Inside it runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip with 16GB of LPDDR5X unified memory, fast memory shared by processor and graphics. Valve said that 16GB allocation helped get Half-Life: Alyx running natively, or directly on the headset.
Developer Pierre-Loup Griffais said there is "not really any sort of distortion" in pricing compared with parts costs. He said the project was too far in development to redesign for less RAM. That matters for a streaming-first device that still runs latency-sensitive work locally, where small delays matter, and must support standalone operation.
The disclosure also covered the Steam Machine living-room PC. Valve confirmed it is selling the $1,049 Steam Machine at cost. Valve offers Steam Machine in 512GB and 2TB storage sizes, both with expandable storage via microSD. Steam Store

For comparison, the older Index remains a useful reference. Valve's Valve Index uses dual 1440x1600 RGB LCDs. Valve states those displays provide 50% more subpixels than OLED for greater sharpness at the same rendering cost. The headset operates at 120 Hz with full backward compatibility to 90 Hz and an experimental 144 Hz mode. Valve offers the Valve Index a la carte or as a complete kit through the Steam Store.
The broader context here is a parts-cost problem, not a positioning problem. When memory and storage prices move sharply, a fixed 16GB LPDDR5X design leaves little room to adjust. Cutting capacity late would mean retesting power, heat, memory bandwidth for the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, and whether apps still run. That tradeoff is sharper when a flagship title like Alyx runs natively rather than purely as a streamed image.
In my view, Valve is signaling it chose to preserve performance rather than cut specs to hit a price. That is consistent with selling the Steam Machine at cost. The short-term cost is a higher entry price than Valve wanted. The longer-term payoff, if the bet holds, is a wireless headset that does not force developers to target a smaller memory limit and can sustain both native and PC-streamed games without fragmenting the Steam library.
