Jean Smart wins fifth straight lead comedy Emmy for Hacks, ties all-time record

Jean Smart has won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for the fifth time for playing Deborah Vance in Season 5 of Hacks on HBO Max. The win at the 77th Emmy Awards takes her to eight career Emmys. She ties the record for most wins by a performer, held by Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Cloris Leachman, according to Variety.

It is her fifth win in the category, and all five have come for the same role. The latest was for the show's fifth season. That season was also its last.

Zendaya presented the award. Hacks comes from creators Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky and Paul W. Downs. Quinta Brunson was among this year's nominees, listed for playing Janine Teagues in Abbott Elementary.

Smart has now won for every season of Hacks. She is the first female performer to complete that run with a single show. The only other actor to win for every season of a series was Bill Cosby, who won for all three seasons of I Spy between 1966 and 1968. Five seasons. Five wins.

The victory followed her 15th career Emmy nomination, according to the University of Washington magazine. It was her fifth consecutive nomination for Hacks. Her earlier wins include guest actress awards for Frasier in 2000 and 2001, and a supporting award for Samantha Who? in 2008. She entered the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 2026.

Allison Janney also sits on eight career wins after her Emmy for The Diplomat. That ties the same all-time record. Ed Asner, another of television's most awarded performers, finished his career with seven wins.

The Primetime Emmy Awards are administered by the Television Academy. They are decided by peer vote, with nearly 24,000 members casting ballots in their own field of expertise, according to the Television Academy. Three sister organisations run Emmy programmes across different sectors of television and broadband.

What makes this stand out is closure. A final season, meaning no further episodes were ordered, closes the book on a character and on the jobs around her. There is no renewal campaign to watch and no cast and crew left waiting on a decision. For viewers, the Deborah Vance story is finished.
