Buffy and Angel Reunite at Emmys as Gellar Says Love Story Will Never End on Screen

Buffy and Angel stood together again at the Emmys, to hand over an award and to say goodbye to a story that will not return.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz reunited on stage at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles during the 2026 Emmy Awards, according to Variety. They were there to present, not to compete.

They presented the Emmy for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie, the category that honours performances in single-season or one-off stories. Matthew Rhys won for The Beast in Me.

Gellar told the audience they will never know how Buffy and Angel's love story ends. She was pointing to a sequel-series pilot, a test episode made to decide on a full series, that was not picked up earlier in 2026. That pilot was linked to a Hulu revival in which Gellar would have returned to mentor a new Slayer, a project cancelled earlier in 2026.

Gellar had spoken about that collapse before. In a March interview with People, she said one person had killed the reboot and described an executive involved who was not a fan of the original series.

Her remarks on stage carried extra weight. Gellar said it had been a tough two years for the Buffy cast and crew.

The company has lost three of its own. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers, died in February 2025 at age 39. Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died in March at age 54. Anthony Head, who played Rupert Giles across all seven seasons, died in June at age 72.

After Head's death, Gellar, Boreanaz and James Marsters were among the cast members who paid public tribute, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Head's family shared news of his death at age 72 with the Associated Press.

The reunion reached back almost three decades. Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for seven seasons from 1997. Boreanaz played Angel in the first three seasons and returned for guest appearances until the finale in 2003, before leading the spinoff Angel from 1999 to 2004. Buffy earned 14 Primetime Emmy nominations and won twice in 1998, for outstanding makeup and outstanding music composition.

The Buffy pair were not the night's only throwback presenters. The 2026 Emmys also lined up a Charlie's Angels reunion, according to Deadline.

For fans, this means the moment was both reunion and full stop. No new chapter. Just two actors, together briefly, marking what the show was and what it lost.
