David Harbour Returns as Red Guardian in Avengers: Doomsday
David Harbour is suiting up again as Alexei Shostakov, better known as the Red Guardian, in Avengers: Doomsday.
The Marvel film is scheduled to reach theatres on Dec. 18, according to Variety. Harbour confirmed the return on the red carpet of the 78th Emmy Awards.
He also talked about acting opposite Robert Downey Jr. in the film. Working closely with him is a joy, Harbour told Variety. He called Downey Jr. a creative powerhouse and unpredictable.
Downey Jr. plays Victor Von Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Doom is the armoured villain better known in the comics as Doctor Doom. In this film, the character looks like Tony Stark, the hero Downey Jr. played for more than a decade.
That casting was confirmed at Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at SDCC 2024. Downey Jr. walked on stage in costume and told the crowd: "New mask, same task," according to Marvel.
Harbour's comments came at television's biggest night. The 78th Emmy Awards aired live on Monday, Sept. 14 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on NBC. Harbour was on the roster as a presenter, the Television Academy announced ahead of the show.
It capped a big month for him. On Sept. 6, Harbour won his first Emmy at the Creative Arts Emmys. That is the separate ceremony held ahead of the main telecast, largely for craft and guest categories.
He won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series, meaning a show built as a single closed story rather than an ongoing season. The award was for his role as Floyd Smernitch in DTF St. Louis.
His co-star Linda Cardellini also won for the production. She took a supporting performance award for DTF St. Louis, according to the Television Academy.
Harbour also pointed to what comes next with his best-known screen daughter. He and Millie Bobby Brown, his former Stranger Things co-star, have a forthcoming untitled project together. It will revisit a father-daughter dynamic.
Writer Jack Thorne is attached to write that project. No release date or platform has been announced.
What makes this stand out is the overlap. A first Emmy, a Marvel return and a reunion are landing within weeks of each other. For fans, this means more Harbour on both screens, with Doomsday first on the calendar in December.
