Volvo has revealed updated plug-in hybrid versions of its XC60 and XC90 SUVs as its first "long range plug-in hybrids."

Preliminary figures based on EPA testing put electric-only range at 78 miles for the XC60 PHEV and 73 miles for the XC90 PHEV. Volvo claims both would have the longest electric range of any plug-in hybrids available in the American market if those preliminary figures are confirmed The Verge. The numbers are preliminary. Confirmation still matters for window stickers and buyer comparison.

Both SUVs use a 41.2 kWh battery with 37.9 kWh usable capacity, meaning the share of stored energy actually available for driving. The battery is built directly into the floor of the vehicle. Volvo puts the electric-range improvement at more than double the previous PHEV variant.

That multiple fits the outgoing ratings still listed by the company. Volvo USA states the 2026 XC90 plug-in hybrid provides up to 32 miles of electric range Volvo USA. For reference, Volvo USA specifications for the XC90 plug-in hybrid also list a gasoline equivalent value of 58 MPGe, which expresses electric efficiency in miles-per-gallon terms, power as 340 kWh / 455 hp, and a 0-60 time of 5.0 s Volvo USA.

Production of the updated XC60 and XC90 is set to begin in late Fall 2026. Customer deliveries are scheduled to begin in early 2027.

The technology changes extend beyond the battery. The updated XC60 includes Google's Gemini chatbot as the new voice assistant. That puts a large-model conversational interface, software that can interpret natural spoken requests, at the center of navigation, media, climate and vehicle controls, alongside the existing Android-based infotainment stack.

The updated XC60 also adds driver-assist features including Automatic Emergency Steering and Braking, collision prevention, and door-opening cyclist alert. Volvo did not position these as hands-off driving. They are intervention and warning functions around steering, braking and egress, or leaving the vehicle.

Styling changes for the XC60 include an upgraded grille, redesigned front bumper, hood, front wings, rear bumper and tailgate, new wheel designs, and a refined Thor's Hammer LED headlight signature. The updates keep the model identifiable.

Looking at what this means for engineers and buyers, the pack size is the shift to watch. A 37.9 kWh usable pack closes much of the gap to early mainstream battery-electric vehicles on usable energy, while retaining a combustion engine for longer trips and towing duty. Floor integration helps with mass distribution and interior packaging, two traditional compromises in plug-in SUVs where the battery intruded on cargo or third-row space.

In my view, the use case is straightforward. A 70-plus mile EPA electric range covers a large share of daily driving on electricity alone, with gasoline as reserve rather than routine. Worth flagging is that real-world electric range will still depend on temperature, speed, payload, wheel and tire choice, and HVAC load. Preliminary EPA figures are a standardized baseline, not a guarantee for any specific commute.

The broader context here is software parity. Adding Gemini voice control and expanded collision-avoidance functions shows Volvo expects the mid-cycle refresh to compete on compute and assistance, not only on electric miles. For tech-literate buyers, the question will be how well voice, driver assistance and battery management are integrated, and how reliably the vehicle stays in electric mode when drivers want it to. If it does, long-range plug-in hybrids become easier to operate as electric vehicles day to day, with an engine attached for edge cases.
