ElevenLabs makes Music v2.5 its default song model
ElevenLabs has switched its song generator to a new model. Music v2.5 went live on Friday, September 11, and is now the default for prompted and reference generation in ElevenMusic, the company's song-generation platform.
Prompted generation means typing a written description to create a track. Reference generation means uploading audio to guide the result. The launch was first detailed by Music Business Worldwide.
The timing is tight. Music v2.5 arrived a day after ElevenLabs announced a multi-year licensing agreement with Universal Music Group on Thursday, September 10. ElevenLabs says the two are separate. The new model was not built with Universal Music Group material.
ElevenLabs calls Music v2.5 its best music model yet. To test it, the company ran a blind comparison of 47,885 pairs, where the same prompt produced one take from each model. Music v2.5 was the preferred take a majority of the time.
The previous model is staying put. Music v2, released on May 26, remains live alongside Music v2.5. Listeners can still pick either version.
So what sounds different? ElevenLabs says songs come out more layered and complex, with better, more natural-sounding instruments, according to ElevenLabs. The company also points to improved audio quality and prompt adherence, the measure of how closely the output follows a written instruction. It supports the same workflows and capabilities as Music v2.
The Universal Music Group agreement sits on a different track. The multi-year strategic agreement begins with a new licensed AI music creation platform for fans, Universal Music Group said in its announcement, reported by Universal Music Group. That platform is focused on remixes and mashups and new track interpretations, according to Music Ally.
What makes this stand out is the pairing. One week brought both a catalogue deal and a model upgrade. For fans, this means the tool they open now runs on v2.5 by default, while the licensed remix platform with Universal is still to come.
