Overwatch bosses name Tracer and Lucio as their first mains

Overwatch game director Aaron Keller started as a Tracer main. Associate game director Alec Dawson started on Lucio. The two leads named their first favourites when asked about their own playtime.

They spoke at BlizzCon 2026 in an interview published on 15 September. The conversation was about personal picks, not balance changes or release plans. It was conducted by GameSpot.

Keller put Tracer first. Tracer is a fast, close-range hero built around short teleports and rewinding time. Keller described her kit, meaning her set of abilities, as almost perfect.

These days Keller does not lock in one hero. He said he typically queues flex, meaning he lets the matchmaker place him where the team has a gap. That usually means playing tank, the durable front-line role tasked with holding space and protecting teammates.

When he lands on tank, Keller rotates through four names. His current pool is Reinhardt, Winston, Zarya and Orisa. Each plays very differently, from a shield-led advance to a high-jump disruption style, so the choice changes the shape of a match.

Dawson took a different path. His first main, meaning his most-played hero, was Lucio. Lucio is a support hero who heals nearby teammates and moves quickly around the map. Dawson said it was Lucio's fluid mobility that pulled him in.

Dawson also looked beyond the original roster. Asked about newer heroes, he singled out Doctrine. The interview did not present that as a ranking of power, just as a hero worth noting among the recent additions.

For fans, this means something simple. The directors play the same way many players do. One finds a favourite and learns every corner of the kit. Later comes the flex queue, the tank fill, and the newer face that breaks the habit.
