Celtic Great Danny McGrain Diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 76
Celtic have confirmed that Danny McGrain has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The former defender is 76. His family shared the news through the club on 15 September 2026, according to BBC.
Celtic issued an official club statement to announce the diagnosis. The club said it has been in close contact with McGrain's family, according to Celtic FC.
The family decided to make the news public so supporters would be aware. His wife, Laraine, spoke about the decision as part of the announcement, according to the Herald Scotland.
McGrain played 663 games for Celtic between 1970 and 1987. He won seven League Championships, five Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups in that time. He then spent one season with Hamilton Academical before ending his playing career in 1988.
He also played 62 times for Scotland. Celtic described him as "Scotland's greatest-ever full-back", a defender who covers the wide areas on either side of the back line.
For fans, this will land hard. McGrain was part of Celtic for almost two decades. Ninety minutes came and went, season after season, and he was still there.
