Middlesex rally to 324-9 as tail frustrates Gloucestershire on day one
Middlesex closed day one on 324 for nine against Gloucestershire in County Championship Division Two at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol, after a stubborn tail-end fightback on 15 September.
They had chosen to bat after winning the toss, but at 222 for eight they were in danger of wasting that call BBC Sport. The recovery came late. And it was decisive.
Toby Roland-Jones was still there at stumps on 44 not out from 98 balls. Sebastian Morgan made 38, striking seven boundaries, and together they added 74 for the ninth wicket. In a four-day game, where each team bats twice and every run carries into the second innings, a stand between the last recognised batters can shift the whole match.
The top order had done the early work without kicking on. Caleb Falconer top-scored with 49, his highest score in first-class cricket — the top level of multi-day cricket — in only his fifth appearance BBC Sport. Max Holden, standing in as captain with Leus du Plooy absent, hit 41 from 71 balls.
No one made a fifty. Several got starts. That tells its own story.
Gloucestershire shared the wickets around. Spinner Sai Kishore bowled 26 overs for two for 54, holding one end tight while seamers rotated at the other. James Langridge and Matt Taylor each took two wickets BBC Sport. After the day’s play, Gloucestershire had taken three bonus points to Middlesex’s two.
The fixture is the 51st match of this season’s Division Two, scheduled for 15 to 18 September in Bristol. The County Championship is England and Wales’s domestic four-day competition, played in two divisions with promotion and points for runs and wickets as well as results.
What makes this stand out is the shape of the day. Middlesex lost regular wickets and never quite got away. Then the ninth-wicket pair batted with calm and common sense. Short balls were ducked. Loose balls were put away. The scoreboard kept moving.
For fans, this means a finely balanced day two. Middlesex will want a few more runs in the morning. Gloucestershire will want to finish it quickly and bat big.
