Pixel Drop Adds VIP Shortcuts, Wider Scam Alerts and Watch Updates
Google has released a new Pixel Drop for Pixel phones and Pixel Watch devices, focused on VIP contacts, wider Scam Detection, and new watch controls. Engadget
Google published the details on September 15, 2026. Phone features cover Pixel 6 and newer, while watch features center on Pixel Watch 5.
One phone change covers VIP contacts. Expanded widgets, small home-screen panels that run an action directly, let people on Pixel 6 and newer text or call favorite contacts without opening the phone or contacts app first. Phones will also show new notification badges for urgent and unread messages from VIPs. The result is a shorter path from lock screen to priority people, with sorting done in place.
Scam Detection is expanding in reach and location. It can now flag possible scam messages across chat apps in notifications in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, Singapore, India, Germany, Mexico, Japan and France. In the US only, it will also flag possible scam messages inside the Gboard keyboard. That second location helps because many chat replies happen from previews and inline replies, without opening the full messaging app.
On the wrist, Google is rolling out the Wear OS 7 update to all Pixel Watch 5 devices. It includes a more personalized version of Gemini, Google's AI assistant, that works offline, plus more accurate GPS route tracking. Offline use means the assistant can answer some questions without a paired phone or steady connection.
The update also adds more one-handed control. A double pinch, tapping thumb and finger together twice, can now open Notification Center, scroll Gemini answers, scroll Wallet cards, and move between Google Maps reviews. It builds on current double-pinch actions, which already answer calls, snooze alarms, and play music without touching the screen.
Pixel 6 and newer phones can add Harry Potter Audiobook Packs, which change wallpaper, icons and sounds. Eligible Pixel users in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, Japan and Australia also get two free months of Audible. Theme, audio and subscription arrive together in the Drop.
The Pixel Drop arrives alongside the September 2026 Android Drop, which Google started rolling out earlier in the month. The broader context here is that no new radio, sensor or model design is involved. VIP badges adjust notification ranking and widget shortcuts. Scam Detection extends an existing screening system to more places and to the keyboard. Double pinch extends an existing motion control to more targets. In my view, that is why Drops of this kind affect daily use more than spec changes. The hardware is unchanged while the steps to get things done shrink.
For families and workplaces managing these phones, two practical details stand out. First, Scam Detection will behave differently by region. Notification alerts cover ten markets, keyboard alerts are US-only, so identical phones will act differently in different countries. Second, offline Gemini and tighter GPS keep more processing and location history on the watch. That helps responsiveness on runs and trips, and it puts more load on battery life and on-device storage. Having watched my kids pin three contacts to the home screen and ignore the rest, I recognize the pattern. People adopt the shortcut, then expect it everywhere.
