Jean-Pierre Serre turns 100 on September 15, 2026.

He began primary school at the École de Vauvert in 1932 and moved to the Lycée Alphonse-Daudet in Nîmes in 1937. His secondary schooling fell in the war years. In 1944 he placed first in the Concours Général in mathematics, a national academic competition, and received his Bachelier ès sciences et ès lettres in the same year.

From 1945 to 1948 he studied at the École Normale Supérieure. He earned the Agrégé des sciences mathématique in 1948, a competitive qualification for teaching and research. He became the youngest member of the Bourbaki group, a collective publishing under the name Nicolas Bourbaki to rewrite core mathematics with strict precision.

Personal and professional dates met in 1948. He married Josiane Heulot on 10 August 1948, in the same year he completed the Agrégé.

His institutional base was the Collège de France. He is honorary professor (professeur honoraire) there and held the Chair of Algebra and Geometry from 1956 to 1994. He received the Fields Medal in 1954 for his work in mathematical topology, the study of properties of shapes that hold under deformation.
