Trash Mountain pairs Hearon and Deschanel for Toronto premiere

Caleb Hearon and Zooey Deschanel play a brother and sister forced back together to clear out their late hoarder father's house in rural Missouri in Trash Mountain.

The comedy has its first screening on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Scotiabank Theatre Toronto during the Toronto International Film Festival, Deadline reported.

The film is directed by Kris Rey and written by Hearon with Ruby Caster, according to the same Deadline interview. It is described as a poignant and funny exploration of love and grief. Grief started it.

Hearon told Deadline's TIFF Studio that he started writing Trash Mountain because he did not know what else to do after his own dad died. The festival lists the story as drawn from Hearon's life, with Hearon starring and sharing the writing credit, according to TIFF.

CAA Media Finance and WME Film Sales are handling sales on the film, Deadline reported. In plain terms, those are the sales agents, the firms that sell distribution rights to cinemas and streamers. Rey, Hearon and Deschanel all appeared together for the Deadline TIFF Studio interview ahead of the premiere.

The central pair are joined by Oscar nominee Jackie Weaver, who appears alongside Hearon and Deschanel, according to TIFF. A performer surnamed Holmes was earlier announced as part of the cast, Deadline reported in November 2025. Part of Hearon's story involves performing stand-up at a drag club, according to Mashable.

For general audiences, the names come with familiar credits. Deschanel appeared in 500 Days of Summer, while Hearon appears in The Devil Wears Prada 2, according to TIFF. Rey previously directed I Used to Go Here, Deadline reported.

The humour here comes from an awkward homecoming. Two siblings, one house full of clutter, and a shared loss neither quite knows how to pack away.
