Indonesia sends Andini's Four Seasons in Java to the 99th Oscars
Indonesia has picked Kamila Andini's "Four Seasons in Java" ("Empat Musim Pertiwi") as its entry for international feature at the 99th Academy Awards, Variety reported on Sept. 16. The category lets each country put forward one film, largely in a language other than English, for Oscar voters to consider.
The film was written and directed by Andini and produced by Ifa Isfansyah for Forka Films. It stars Putri Marino, Arya Saloka, Christine Hakim and Hana Malasan. Marino plays a woman freed after 20 years in prison, according to festival coverage from Variety.
Early trade coverage described the project as an exploration of a sexual assault survivor's story, Variety reported in 2024. The Toronto International Film Festival programme notes describe it as using nature and technology as metaphors for truth and power, per TIFF. The setting is Java. The timeline spans two decades apart.
The film had its world premiere in the Centrepiece programme at the Toronto Film Festival. That strand is Toronto's showcase for strong new work from around the world. It has also earned a best cinematography nomination at the 2026 Asian Pacific Screen Awards.
It is a long road to the screen. The production spans Indonesia, France, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia and Singapore. Paris-based Goodfellas is handling worldwide sales, which means finding distributors country by country.
The project won two prizes at the inaugural Tokyo gap-financing market, a meeting place where producers close the last funds for a film. That included the top Tokyo Project Award, valued at $13,000 (¥2m), Screen Daily reported in 2025. It is set for a wide theatre release in Indonesia on Oct. 8.
It is her second run. Andini's 2021 feature "Yuni" won the Platform Prize at Toronto and became Indonesia's Oscar submission that year. That history gives distributors and voters a clear reference point.
What makes this stand out for audiences is the calendar. A Toronto premiere in September, a home release in October and an awards submission in the same stretch put the film in front of three different publics at once. For fans outside Indonesia, the next sightings will likely come through festival dates and local distributors secured by Goodfellas.
