Meta may show camera-free smart glasses codenamed Luna at its Connect event next week, according to reporting from The Verge citing The Information.

Luna drops the camera entirely. It keeps speakers for audio playback and packs six microphones for voice interaction with Meta AI and the Muse AI agent. It has no viewfinder and no capture button.

Removing cameras and sensors let Meta shrink the arms and move the design closer to ordinary frames. Lenses and sensors add thickness, heat, and battery tradeoffs. An audio-only design eases all three.

Meta is reportedly targeting October to sell Luna in two styles named Clubmaster and Burbank. The plan, as described in the September 16 report, is a reveal at Connect followed quickly by retail availability.

Connect is also expected to include a second wearable. AR glasses codenamed Phoenix are expected to be shown at the event, with the ability to show a virtual workspace or movie screen in AR. Release is planned for 2027.

Far-field speech recognition, or picking up voice at a distance, beamforming across the mic array to focus on the speaker, echo cancellation for open-ear speakers, and low-power wake-word detection matter more than screen brightness or waveguide efficiency. Six microphones point to stronger performance in street noise and crowded rooms, where single- or dual-mic systems lose accuracy. The limit shifts to inference delay and network round-trip time, not graphics.

In my view, that makes Luna the more telling near-term test. Phoenix follows the familiar AR promise of steady virtual monitors and media screens. It is useful, but it depends on display brightness, field of view, eyebox tolerance, and all-day power, problems the industry has worked on for a decade. Luna tests a simpler idea, that people will wear glasses all day if they look normal and answer reliably.

For historical context, competition helps explain the timing. Bloomberg News has reported that Apple plans to release smart glasses at the end of next year, via a May 2025 Reuters report. Meta and EssilorLuxottica were also considering doubling production capacity for Ray-Ban AI-powered smart glasses, according to a January 2026 Reuters report. Neither detail predicts Luna sales, but together they suggest supply-chain expectations that the category will reach beyond early adopters.

Worth flagging for enterprise readers, audio-first glasses change deployment. No camera means no first-person video for remote assistance, inspection, or documentation. It also means fewer data-retention and consent reviews before a pilot. IT teams will care less about managing captured media and more about Bluetooth pairing, microphone mute guarantees, and how voice transcripts are stored and routed between on-device processing and cloud inference.

From watching my own kids grow up through the Bluetooth headset era, the phone-camera backlash, and the AirPods-everywhere phase, I have seen a pattern. Each time, the winner was not the most capable device. It was the one people forgot they were wearing. Meta appears to be betting Luna can reach that point by removing the most debated sensor and letting the assistant carry the value.
