16-year-old Kyle Glasgow called into Scotland Under-21 squad
Sixteen-year-old Kyle Glasgow has been called into Scotland's Under-21 squad.
New head coach Tony Docherty named the teenager in his first squad since replacing Scot Gemmill, ahead of European Championship qualifiers against Azerbaijan and Bulgaria BBC Sport.
Glasgow is a forward on loan at Alloa Athletic from Rangers. Loan means he is temporarily playing for Alloa while still contracted to Rangers. He has scored three goals in 10 games in Scottish League 1, the third tier of Scottish football.
He is still only 16. He will now train and play with a group up to five years older than him, in the age-group side that sits one step below the full national team.
Docherty knows the Scottish game well. The former Dundee and Ross County manager is assisted with the Under-21s by former Hearts boss Steven Naismith.
His first selection leans fresh. Seven uncapped players are included, among them St Mirren duo Henry Fieldson and Louis Jackson. Manchester United defender Daniel Armer and 19-year-old United midfielder Tyler Fletcher are also in.
Scotland face Azerbaijan at Rugby Park on 30 September, then travel to Bulgaria on 6 October. Both games are qualifiers for the Under-21 European Championship BBC Sport.
What makes this stand out is the age gap. Strikers are often picked on form and nerve. Docherty has clearly liked what he has seen from Glasgow against senior defenders at Alloa.
