Harwood-Bellis set for Villa debut after Champions League omission
Taylor Harwood-Bellis cost Aston Villa £30m and has not played a minute yet. The 24-year-old central defender was left out of Villa’s squad for the Champions League, European football’s top club competition. His wait should end against Coventry in the Carabao Cup, England’s league cup, on Wednesday. BBC Sport
Manager Unai Emery confirmed the plan before the Coventry tie. “His time is coming,” Emery said of Harwood-Bellis. He has backed the new signing to force his way in.
The Champions League call was about numbers. Clubs can name only 23 players in their European squad. Emery said: “We needed to take off someone, and it was Taylor.” Teenage striker Brian Madjo and Modou Cisse were also left out.
Harwood-Bellis was signed from Southampton to replace Ezri Konsa. Konsa joined Arsenal for £51m late in the window. Sweden defender Victor Lindelof has started all six of Villa’s games so far this season in central defence.
Villa need stability at the back. They lost 2-1 at Nottingham Forest last time out after conceding 22 shots. Ian Maatsen is sidelined until November with an ankle injury, while Pau Torres is out for three weeks with a hamstring problem, with the home game against Brentford on 10 October pencilled as a possible return.
The move ended a stop-start summer for Harwood-Bellis. He last played for Southampton in a 2-1 defeat by Watford on 16 August, then sat out three matches while the transfer was negotiated. Southampton had finished bottom of the Premier League in 2024-25 with just 12 points.
He arrives with pedigree. Harwood-Bellis scored on his only England appearance, against the Republic of Ireland in 2024. He had spoken of his excitement at playing on the biggest stage before Villa’s European squad was confirmed.
For fans, this means patience. A debut in the cup offers a first proper look, with league minutes likely to follow as injuries bite and the fixtures pile up. Villa Park will want to see quickly what £30m has bought.
