Na Hong-jin has written a 'Hope' sequel, but another film comes first
The sequel to 'Hope' is already written.
Writer-director Na Hong-jin confirmed the script exists, Variety reported in July. He conceived the sci-fi epic as the first chapter of a potential franchise.
The follow-up would change viewpoint. Na told The Playlist the planned sequel shifts toward the aliens' perspective. He also said he wants to make a darker, bloodier film before returning to 'Hope'.
'Hope' runs 160 minutes. It is set in Hope Harbor, a fictional border town near the Korean Demilitarized Zone.
The story follows a police chief and his deputy as they investigate a monstrous incursion. Hwang Jung-min plays police chief Bum-seok, Hoyeon plays deputy Sung-ae, and Zo In-sung plays Sung-ki, leader of an organised hunter group.
The first trailer shows giant monsters, gun battles and wild action sequences. The film ends with a twist, Gold Derby reported.
Na is known for 'The Chaser' from 2008, 'The Yellow Sea' from 2010 and 'The Wailing' from 2016. 'Hope' is his large-scale move into science fiction.
It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The screening drew a six-minute standing ovation and divided opinion after a controversial first showing.
Neon released the film in cinemas across North America, meaning the United States and Canada, on Sept. 9. By Sept. 16 it had earned $36 million in South Korea and just over $5 million in its first extended weekend in North America, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
For fans, this means patience. The script is ready, but Na has another film in mind first.
