Netflix develops suburban thriller Scope with Ray Mendoza directing

Netflix is developing Scope, a mystery action thriller to be directed by Ray Mendoza, as reported by Deadline on 16 September 2026. Filmmaker Jaume Collet-Serra is backing the project through his company Jadis Collective. Netflix picked up the film preemptively, meaning it bought the package outright before rival buyers could make offers.

The story centres on a battle-hardened special forces operator who returns home to recuperate from a traumatising injury. Confined and recovering, he becomes caught up in an unexpected suburban mystery. It is billed as being in the vein of Disturbia and Rear Window, according to Deadline.

Scope began life as a spec script, a screenplay written without a buyer already attached, by Charley Parlapanides, Vlas Parlapanides and Scott Charnick. Spec scripts are often shopped around town in search of a studio home. In this case the sale was organised through Jadis Collective, which brought the project to Netflix.

Collet-Serra and Max Jacoby will produce the film via Jadis Collective, alongside Trevor Engelson and Josh McGuire of Underground. Producers in this sense oversee the film from development through delivery, hiring key talent and guiding the production. The line-up places Mendoza, Collet-Serra and two production banners behind one thriller.

Charley and Vlas Parlapanides are already known to Netflix viewers as the creators of Blood of Zeus, the streamer's adult animated series. That show reworks Greek mythology for an older audience, with gods, heroes and monsters. Their move from animation rooted in myth to a live-action thriller set in suburbia is a sharp change of setting.

What makes this stand out is the combination. A soldier trained for combat zones is suddenly stuck at home, watching the street. For fans, this means a familiar suspense idea, the neighbour who may be hiding something, seen through the eyes of someone trained to notice danger.
