Resident Evil Reboot Opens Sept 18 From Sony
Sony's Resident Evil reboot opens exclusively in movie theatres on Friday, September 18.
The film is directed by Zach Cregger from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten, and stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier caught in a fight to stay alive, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The cast lists Abrams alongside Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser and Will Merrick. It runs 1 hour 30 minutes and is rated R. Sony Pictures describes it as a completely new story, with Bryan unwittingly finding himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival.
The reboot is based on the horror video game and is staged as a zombie movie. Cregger's package sparked a bidding war among studios before landing at Sony, which dated the film for September 2026, as reported by Variety. A trailer was later shown to theatre owners at CinemaCon and then released publicly.
Cregger previously made the horror films Barbarian and Weapons. Abrams worked with him on Weapons and is known for roles in Euphoria and Wolfs. Cregger cut jokes from Resident Evil after test screenings because the film tested better without them, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Tracking published on September 3 points to a $35 million domestic opening, with domestic meaning the United States and Canada, according to Deadline. First reactions have described the film as scary, according to Variety. Sony lists the title as exclusively in movie theatres.
For fans, this means a short, sharp night out. Two days separate the September 16 chatter from the September 18 opening, and the calendar slot gives the film a clear horror corridor before the autumn releases crowd in.
