Instagram Doubles Carousel Capacity and Adds Per-Slide Captions

Instagram has updated its carousel format to support up to 20 images per post and introduced the ability to assign a distinct caption to each individual slide, according to an announcement published on the platform on 18 June 2026.

The previous ceiling for carousel posts was 10 images. Doubling that limit changes what kind of content fits within a single shareable post — a photo essay, a step-by-step tutorial, or a product reveal can now exist as one post rather than requiring multiple separate posts or a link elsewhere.

The per-slide caption feature is the more structurally interesting change. Until now, carousel posts carried a single caption attached to the entire post — any text specific to a given image had to be embedded in the image itself, placed in the comments, or left out. Per-slide captions let creators attach text directly to each frame. This opens the door to things that previously required workarounds: annotated charts and graphs, multilingual content paired side-by-side, instructional sequences where each step needs explanation. For accessibility tools and apps that read post data through Instagram's API, this also adds a new field to track.

From a content strategy angle, this moves the carousel closer to a document or presentation format than a simple photo album. Other platforms have been quietly competing on this front for a while — LinkedIn's document upload, the PDF-as-carousel workaround on that platform, and Pinterest's multi-image pins all serve the same creator need: more information density per post. Instagram is reaching a similar destination through its own product path.

Developers and companies that build tools on top of Instagram need to pay attention. Any app that pulls carousel data through the Instagram Graph API will need to handle the expanded slide count and new per-slide caption fields. If a tool was built assuming a maximum of 10 images or a single caption per post, it may now silently truncate data or run into mismatches. Social media management tools, analytics dashboards, and publishing platforms that write back to Instagram should audit their integrations sooner rather than later.

There is also an algorithmic angle, though Instagram has not disclosed any ranking changes with this announcement. More text per post — across up to 20 caption fields — gives Instagram's recommendation engine significantly more data about the content. Whether that shifts how often carousels appear relative to Reels or single-image posts is unclear, and creator teams will likely start testing this quickly.

The update arrives as Meta has been focused on deepening the utility of existing formats rather than launching entirely new ones. Longer carousels with richer metadata fit that pattern without asking users to learn a new interaction — the swipe gesture is already familiar across the platform. For creators whose main publishing method is carousels, these changes are additive and backward-compatible; existing posts work as before.
