Earl Spencer Says Then-Prince Charles Told Him Diana Would Soon Be Forgotten
Diana, Princess of Wales's younger brother says that days after her death, the then-Prince Charles told him she would soon be forgotten.
The allegation comes from a preview of Earl Spencer's coming memoir, as reported by Town & Country citing the Daily Mail. The book is not out yet.
Spencer says the exchange followed a disagreement about the funeral. He told Charles, now King Charles III, that Diana would not have wanted her young sons to face the public ordeal of walking behind her coffin. Prince William was then 15. Prince Harry was then 12.
Charles allegedly replied, "Rest assured, we'll forget her soon enough." That quote rests entirely on the preview account. It has not been independently confirmed.
Buckingham Palace, the king's official London office and residence, said it has no comment on the allegation. The palace did not elaborate.
The memoir is titled `Swan Song: Diana, My Sister.' It is scheduled for release in Britain on Sept. 22, 2026, in the 30th anniversary year of Diana's death. Diana died at age 36 in a car crash.
Its author is Charles Spencer, 62, known as Earl Spencer, the hereditary noble title held by Diana's brother. He is the 9th to hold the title and works as a historian. He is Diana's younger brother.
Spencer has said he believes his sister would have approved every word of the book, according to People. On the August anniversary of her death, he flew a flag at half-mast. The memoir was announced as a book about her life for publication in the United Kingdom.
Separately, copies of the memoir were stolen from a truck in the Netherlands ahead of publication, according to The Telegraph and People. No details about how many copies were taken have been made public. The publisher has not described how the theft might affect the Sept. 22 release.
What makes this stand out is the source. This is not a secondhand palace account. It is Diana's brother, writing about his sister and naming a private conversation with her former husband as he remembers it.
