Vampire RPG Nighthawks escapes Steam's Adults Only jail before launch
Vampire role-playing game Nighthawks has cleared Steam's Adults Only rating just days before release.
The developers overturned the label ahead of the scheduled launch on 22 September, after Valve mistakenly flagged the game for sexual content, Eurogamer reported. The timing was tight. A failed appeal would have left the game hidden across much of the store.
On Steam, Valve's PC storefront, an Adults Only tag works like a lock. The game drops out of general browsing, search and recommendations. Few casual shoppers ever see it.
Nighthawks is a vampire role-playing game where players build a nightclub empire as a modern monster. Fear, seduction and supernatural gifts are the tools of the trade, according to publisher Wadjet Eye Games. The publisher said the project spent eight years in development, and has published a trailer asking players to add the game to their Steam wishlists.
The team pushed back hard on the classification. Nighthawks is not porn, they said, although it is sexy and deals with mature themes. Sexy scenes are text only, they explained, and any nudity is covered with strategically placed props and hands.
Valve expedited its review of the appeal and allowed the rating to be dropped. It worked. Why the tag was applied in the first place is still unclear, GamesRadar reported.
The store page now describes strong language and adult situations, with occasional moments of non-explicit nudity in romance scenes. That wording matters on Steam. It signals mature content without triggering the stricter Adults Only filter.
The row did the game one favour. Wishlists essentially doubled overnight after publicity around the classification spread. The developers realised the extra attention was helping, even as the label threatened the launch itself.
For players who have followed the long development, this means a normal release. No hidden listing. No last-minute move to another storefront.
What makes this stand out is the turnaround. One week the game was facing invisibility. The next it arrives with a bigger audience than before, and with its original date intact.
